Arpeggio Study Part 1

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, November 17, 2017, In : music theory

What is Arpeggios?

Let me explain this to you in a way that I think will uncover what somethimes can seem a bit of a mystery. Imagins the dawn of time some people agreed og a group of notes, in this case the Major scale, and then imagine a monestry a group of munks are singing and one of them notices that when you skip every other note in that scale and ask three munks to sing the first, thir and fifth note of that scale it sounds awesome, then take those three notes and sing the notes one a...

Chopin Etude No. 12 op. 25 Shred Guitar

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, June 18, 2017, In : Neo Classical Shred Guitar

About
This lesson is taken from Chopin's 12 Etudes Opus 25 not to be mistaken from Opus 10. Its just parts of it but still very enjoyable. Regarding the technique, as I also explain in the video I use the Sweep picking technique with the pick using my thumb and index finger, this enables me to use my long finger and little finger to use the Taping technique and play the final notes of the Arpeggios. Regarding the Diminished sevent Arpeggios I use the Hammer on and Pull off Technique combined w...

About these Arpeggios

This piece comes from my new album Concerto, its the third track on the album and is called Monuments, this partucular thing is the intro Arpeggios and represents a lot of different interresting Arpeggios mainly using Sweep picking. We both getu regular triad Arpeggios but also four note Dominant Arpeggios in different inversions, Major seven and diminished sevens plus the really cool Major seven raised fifth from the third step of the Harmonic minor scale

Blues Shred Techniques

Techniques
This one is pretty cool and makes use of some unorthodox ways of playing sweep picking arpeggios, in this case im playing a D dominant arpeggio, but I play through some new patterns and add Tapping to it. What makes this easyer to utilize is to make sure of a very specific fingering, because you can actually make it pretty much impossible for yourselves if you dont create a specific fingering for your self that you use each and every time, you can of course use mine as I show in th...

Easy Scale Licks Implementation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Saturday, January 7, 2017, In : Alternate Picking

Implementation
Obviously the idea of this video and blog is not the lick in it self but more a concept to use when you are soloing in the scales. And let me just apologize for the old url on the video, the video is not completely new but I find the info and idea very relevant and its some time ago I posted some Alternate Picking lessons. The idea is to take a basic concept or a pattern you want to play within the scale pattern and repeat that in the next or previous scale pattern, this is an e...

Blues Shred Sweep Picking Tapping

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, In : blues shred

Theory
So this is obviously a blues lick and by the way sorry for the late blog text. Its such a cool lick, I myself have started to work it into my improvisation where it ultimately belongs. The way to start working it into your playing is to pay attention to when you reach the second mode of the Major scale, or if you think of it as being in the fifth position from the A string of course which is of course theoretically more correct since thats the Mixolydian step which is Major with the low...

About Scales
This lesson is all about four note Arpeggios and in this case the A Major seven and the E Dominant seven, as I explain in the video you can easily incorporate it into the A major scale or of course the Major scale in general, start it from the first step of the Major scale, regarding the technical stuff

Technique
As you can see I combine Tapping using two fingers and in this example I use the long finger and the Little finger, this helps me easily go into the Sweep picking techniqu...

Complete Fret Board Sweep Picking Arpeggios

Technique and Fingering
In a few of the inversions of the Arpeggios there are some specific fingerings that you need to make use of to be able to play it. In the first Inversiosn make sure you use the ring finger to bar over the low E string and A sting(this is of course the 7 string version of the piece) this makes it possible to use the long finger on the D string and finally the Index and

About

Hey here is the second of the Contemporary Shred Guitar Lessons, this one is even more Contemporary and this time theres no Neo Classical Shred Guitar influences. Its an E Major 7 Arpeggio played in three inversions, this tachnique requires some more finesse than the triads because of all the added Hammer on's and Pull off's along the way. Especially the second inversion requires a sleight of hand and no heavy-handedness.

Learning to play fast is actually simpler than you might think but what you first of all need to know is to cut through all the talk and hype about learning to play fast. About
This lesson is a piece I have had a lot of benefits from practicing now for some weeks. This is the awesome thing about composing a piece that makes use of all the things you want to be able to play in any situation. So for example if you need to work on either your Sweep picking, your Alternate picking or you 8 finger tapping, this could be a good example of a put together piece that will work on those, so identify what you need to work on and put together a cool piece or by all mean...

About
This is a C Major slash A minor Sweep picking, Tapping, Legato and sliding Arpeggios. It's really cool sounding and you can work it into your own playing from the second position of the Major scale, this means that when you are improvising and soloing and you at one point reach the second Scale position and also the G string you can break into this lick. Of course this is in the key of C but it will benefit you to the extreme if you try to use it in other keys, you could skip the 24th ...

Japanese Scale Arpeggio

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, August 7, 2015, In : exotic scales

About
This is an old lesson from my old channel, but the lick is kinda cool. The thing about the Japanese scale is that it only consists of five notes, and just like in the Pentatonic scale, it pretty much trims all the fat and this way makes sure that each individual note sounds awesome in conjunction with the chord. Regarding the lick that I still call an Arpeggio even though it makes use of all five notes of the scale, but its played using Sweep picking and you still get the Arpeggio type...

Jazz Shred Arpeggios

About

In this lesson we are going through a standard Jazz chord movement which is the II-V-I or 2-5-1 movement. Its often or was often used as a method as a tonal "breakthrough" to go into the next II-V-I or II-V movement in the next key. But here we will just use it as a Super imposing tool. Which we will "act" as if we play over the particular chord(which I actually do in the video) but we can easily use it over just one chord which will then be the Super imposing. But to get a deeper under...

About

The first thing that I need to mention here is that once you have played through the lesson the first time and if you have played Alternate picking through the whole piece you will start over with the opposite type picking stroke. This means that if you started with a down stroke you will play the second time round with an up stroke. This certainly created a few challenges for me, but thats great, this means that you will improve you Alternate picking technique both starting with and up...

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with triads, I use them all the time, but its a question about what sound you're after, if you want Neo Classical Metal or Shred guitar then the triad arpeggios are perfect, I might also add a Dominant seven arpeggio to a Neo Classical Metal piece of music though, but thats pretty much...

This is a highly advanced technique I invented years ago where I add Tapping sort of behind the fretting hand, for lack of a better name I call it theCross Hands technique. Added is a sweet Sweep picking Dominant Arpeggio I invented too, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do

About
This is a great introduction into the combination of Sweep picking and 8 finger tapping, especially because the intervals in the right and left hand are not crazy demanding as they often tend to be in those type of licks, so good luck and shred on !

About
I did this video a while ago with the intention of starting a site with only beginner guitar stuff. I saw the video through and I think the video has some important knowledge if you want to learn how to play guitar shred guitar and lead guitar style of course. I go through all the pitfalls I believe there can appear when you want to play fast alternate picking such as where to establish your control of the right arm and hand. The first point of control of the movement actually starts in ...

Jason Becker The black cat

About
Hey fellas, this piece is Jason Becker's Sweep picking extrordinaire from the cacophony album Go Off. If you have not checked it out yet I can tell you that its a must have album if you're into Shred Guitar and of course especially if you love Jason Becker. Theres a few not so typical ways of playing Sweep picking Arpeggios in this piece, or at least thats the way I play it since I never saw Jason play it I just listened to the notes from the album and created this, I hope you'll enjoy...

Jason Becker Serrana Arpeggios

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, March 8, 2015, In : jason Becker

About
Hey guys I really feel there is a need for a tutorial in this incredible shred guitar piece by the Sweep picking Arpeggio master Jason Becker. But first of all I want to describe the version I did. Its almost completely true to the version that Jason Becker does in the popular clip he did in a clinic in the eighties.

But when I was listening to that version I was very unclear on some of the final arpeggios so I instead turned to the sequenced version which is on the album Perspective. An...

Sweep picking Tapping technique tutorial

About
In this lesson we are going to dig all the way to the bottom of learning first of all how th play Sweep picking, but also how to combine it with Tapping. The focus of this video is also to make a seemingly very technical lick into something that can be grasped by anybody, even beginners. So if you feel you are a newbie at playing guitar or Shred Guitar, dont be fooled by the apperant relative high level of difficulty, because this lesson is also for you. What it takes is some dedication ...

String skipping Alternate picking

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, March 6, 2015, In : string skipping

About
Hey guys and dolls ! here is another shred guitar lesson, this one is string skipping and as I also explain in the video the obvious inspiration is of course Paul Gilbert but also that I prefer playing alternate picking all the way through instead of combining alternate picking with hammer on and pull off as Paul Gilbert does. There´s no doubt that this way of using alternate picking all the way is way more challenging since you have to be really quick with the picking hand to avoid spa...

Sweep Picking Harmonic Minor Sixth Mode

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, March 17, 2013, In : sweep picking

This Major seventh arpeggio fits the sixth step in the Harmonic Minors scale as well as it fith the first and fourth position in the Major scale.Regarding the sixth mode in the Harmonic Minor scale it is called the Metropolitan scale but using a simple four note arpeggio only calls for a Major seventh arpeggio even though the scale itself has a raised ninth. Good luck !

Sweep Picking Etude

Sweep Picking Etude

This little symphony of Sweep Picking arpeggios consists of a few different elements than the obvious sweep picking triads. The second arpeggiosI play is a E7 when I both play the seventh on the G string and on the high E string. And between the E dominant arpeggio and A minor triad I play a few Pentatonic style legato phrases and here you need to be aware of adjusting the index finger to be able to move into the A minor triad in order to be able to cover both the high E st...

Economy Picking Arpeggio

In this arpeggio I play a variety of economy picking and sweep picking. All the ascending part is economy picking and the descending part is mostly sweep picking but also some economy picking concepts are used

Economy Picking
The economy picking technique has a few concepts that you pretty much cant derive from without using a new technique

1. Even number of notes to change direction

2. Odd number of notes to stay in the same direction

3. The picking technique directs th...

This arpeggio is quite a stretch because here we actually have a five note sweep picking arpeggio and we actually play three notes per string on a few strings using hammer on ´s and pull off´s and you can use it from the fifth position in the Harmonic Minor scale. Good luck !

Harmonic Minor Sweep Picking Dominant Arpeggio

This sweep picking arpeggio can be used from the fifth step in the Harmonic Minor scale. It can actually also be used from the fifth step in the Major scale, in the Melodic Minor scale you can use it both from the fourth and fifth step. Take key to the specific fingering that im using in the video. I think it leverages the possibility to increase the speed as fast as possible. Good luck !

This sweep picking arpeggio is minor 7 and fits the fourth mode of the Harmonic Minor scale. It can also easily be used in the Major scale from the second, third and sixth mode in the Major scale. It also really cool if you are searching for a new sound instead of the triads. Good luck

Harmonic Minor Sweep Picking Arpeggio 3

This lovely sweep picking fits the third mode in the Harmonic Minor scale which is Major seven with the raised fifth. But I also add a four finger per string legato phrase on the high E string which then in turn adds the nine and the eleventh to the arpeggio, so the only note missing for it to become a thirteenth and then having all the notes of the scale is the G sharp, you could add it with a tap if you like. Good luck !

Harmonic Minor Sweep Picking Arpeggio 2

This arpeggio is a Bminor seven flat five and it requires a bit of a unusual fingering and a few extra hammer on´s and pull off´s but nothing some practicing sessions with a metronome cant fix. It fits the second mode of the Harmonic minor scale as well as the seventh mode of the Major scale. Good luck !

Here is another cool exotic sweep picking arpeggio, its major seventh and added flat sixth and flat nine and to add those notes we both use hammer on´s, pull off´s and slides, so to make the comination of all those different techniques sound good its really benefitial to practice with a metronome. This arpeggio is really crazy, it pertains both the sharp ninth and the flat ninth, its actually a major arpeggio ut starts as a minor. You could also see it as a combination of two different arpeggios or it could also be seen as a Duble Harmonic Minor scale. Good luck !

Sweep Picking Secret Arpeggios 1

Hey Fellas ! Im starting a saucy series of Secret Arpeggios. The reason I call them something like that is because they are arpeggios that are very unusual, from Exotic scales among others, some of them contains pretty much all the notes of the scale that gives it the specific sound. And the other reason is because I like the drama there is in calling something "Secret" So instead of dwelling anymore on this, lets get to the important stuff.... Learning to util...

Sweep Picking Arpeggios Contemporary

Here is a cool sweep picking arpeggio that sort of evolves into to a larger sweep picking arpeggio using slide effects that really adds something cool to the overall sound. Make sure that the large number of hammer ons and pull offs during the sweep picking pattern does not throw off the timing, evidently practicing with a metronome helps solve these kind of issues. Good luck !

Sweep Picking Inversions Minor

About
This is yet again a really cool way to play through the minor arpeggios horizontally instead of the typical vertical way. It does take a quite specific fingering so take not to the fingering I use and see if that fits your hand and if not be sure to make up your own and stay with that until you reach the speed you want in this lick. Good luck !
