The Tapping Revelation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, In : Guitar Tapping

Two ways of playing the Pentatonic scale using Tapping, the first way is to play the Pentatonic scale as a three notes per scale pattern and then adding one note as Tapping, using this way you play a new pattern on every other string.

The other way is to play the good old Pentatonic pattern you may know using two notes per string, then the cool thing is that the pattern you would play on every other string, in this case the A, G and high E string you add to the same string using a two note Ta...

Super charge your results

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, November 18, 2018, In : how to practice

It's so simple
Its all about results and often we forget that to get results we need to be a little more exclusive in what we practice instead of trying to learn everything at the same time.

Of course you should at some point learn all the techniques you want to master but not everything at the same time.

What kicks us in the butt to practice and makes the process so much more fun is the results so instead of trying to learn everything now, let's focus on just one thing at the time and get resul...

Extreme Sweep Picking 8 Finger Tapping

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, November 1, 2018, In : sweep picking 8 finger tapping

Technique
This is sweep picking combined with 8 finger tapping and to be able to do this properly you have to learn and master the technique where I slide the pick up the thumb using my index finger, this movement enables you to use all four fingers on each hand to do the 8 finger tapping technique. This is obviously not an easy technique but its a technique I developed many years ago to combine those two wonderfull techniques, sweep picking and 8 finger tapping

Theory
The way you can implement ...

Alternate Picking Help

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, February 11, 2018, In : Alternate Picking

Alternate picking
A large part of developing the perfect Alternate Picking technique is a numbers game, and few people ever develop a good enough technique making them able to play really fast and clean alternate picking.

How to practice alternate picking
Once you are one hundred percent sure that you are playing the alternate picking correctly, you know you always without exceptions play an up stroke after playing a down stroke and vice versa and all the other little but critical elements, for...

Sweep picking secrets part 2

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Saturday, January 6, 2018, In : sweep picking

Lesson

One of the things you can take from this video other than the knowledge of the problem of the advancing nature of the sound when you ascend and descend the pick on the strings which you need to be aware of when you practice sweep picking that you don't get cheated by that and start practicing and really monitor closely if you can hear each and every note.

Is to combine another technique that you are contempt with so you can sort of split test the sweep picking with that, as I do for e...

Another Trick That Makes You Practice Consistently

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Monday, December 18, 2017, In : how to practice

Take what you already know and get the most out of it

As you can also see in the video I take some techniques that I already know and bunch them together to a new and fun pattern. What I also do is I identify what techniques or patterns I need to work on and make sure they become a part of the new piece I practice. So for me for example I want to practice some descending alternate picking and also a few triad arpeggios that always needs attention to stay on the edge.

Chances are that you at s...

The Trick That Makes You Practice Consistently

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Saturday, December 9, 2017, In : how to practice

Good discipline versus bad discipline

One of the so called tricks I used to make myself practice all the time when I was developing my chops back in the days was using discipline, but I know I have been preaching that discipline will not last and creates a lot of stress, that being said I came to think of what awesome things discipline can produce which is to create the freedom later after chosing whats right for you in this moment if you want to be the greatest guitar player you can be

The "tr...

Super 4 Notes Per String Legato

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, November 13, 2016, In : legato

How To Play
This lick after the initial time it takes to get used to the four notes per string concept is relatively simple to play and you can improvise all you want with the number of times you repeat each four notes per string pattern and make it a little more your own idea.
But what needs drilling in this one is the final pattern on the hihg E string as I also touch upon in the video, that final high E can take some time to avoid the muting of that note, which is what happened a lot for ...

How to practice to become your best

So here in this blog I will go through what has helped me and still is helping me develop today.

How To Play Fast - what everybody ought to know about playing fast

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, January 14, 2016, In : beginner shred guitar

A simple system that often seem complicated

This video presents to you the do's and dont's of learning to play fast. Learning to play fast is actually simpler than you might think but what you first of all need to know is to cut through all the talk and hype about learning to play fast. I have been teaching guitar for twenty plus years now and again and again I hear students that first come to me talk about stuff they read or saw on the internet that should be the "trick" to learn to play fa...

Fancy Arpeggios

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, August 14, 2015, In : Sweep Picking Tapping

About
This is a C Major slash A minor Sweep picking, Tapping, Legato and sliding Arpeggios. It's really cool sounding and you can work it into your own playing from the second position of the Major scale, this means that when you are improvising and soloing and you at one point reach the second Scale position and also the G string you can break into this lick. Of course this is in the key of C but it will benefit you to the extreme if you try to use it in other keys, you could skip the 24th ...

Blues Shred Arpeggios

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, In : blues shred

About
It's obviously not often that you would use sweep picking Arpeggios in a standard Blues, but you can absolutely get the sweet benefits of the Blues sound in almost everything else, so here are a standard Blues Vamp using four note Dominant arpeggios with added the minor thirds or raised ninths if you will into the Major seven Arpeggios which is a typical "trick" that are one of the "building stones" of creating the Blues sound. As I also state in the video its extremely important that ...

Exotic scales Enigmatic scale Legato lesson

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, April 2, 2015, In : exotic scales

About
This lick is composed from the really weird scale called The Enigmatic scale, and the name actually makes a lot of sense because just hearing the scale in itself gives no real clue as to what the root is. But the lick works perfectly as a lick you throw into something that's very harmonic which then will really throw you off for a second because it sounds so out there. Other than that the video is also made in the period where I produced the Mega program about mastering the Legato techni...

The 5 critical Steps to fast Alternate picking

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, March 27, 2015, In : Alternate Picking

About
Alternate picking can be such a frustrating technique because you develop the speed in another way than with many other techniques, in Alternate picking we develop the speed in quantum leaps instead of gradually getting faster. So a lot of people give up because they don't see the improvement they expect. But check out these five steps in this video and adjust any possible "wrong" way that has not taken you to the result you are after

Step 1. Practice at a pace where you have total cont...

Extreme Legato and Improvisation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, In : Legato Guitar Lessons

About
This lick is really extreme to the max because it makes use of the Pentatonic scale which has some quite large stepsand played with four notes per string and string skipping. I actually think it makes it a little easier to play little sequences between two patterns and it can also help you to do repetitions on each pattern. I also strongly suggest that you warm up your hand for stuff like this to make sure the quality of the notes is good because if you dont then you might experience tha...

Blues Legato lick 2

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, In : Legato Guitar Lessons

About
Here is the second contribution to the blues scale shred guitar improvisation. This one is in my opinion a little challenging in doing ascending hammer on´s and pull off´s and especially the part where you go from the high E string skip the B string and enter the G string with a continuity of chromatic notes started off with the ringfinger. The reason it takes a lot of effort to make it work is partly because you are trying to pull it off in such small space so not only is it the part...

Blues Shred Improvisation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Monday, March 23, 2015, In : how to improvise

About
This lick is composed from the B minor Blues scale but played all legato style and three notes per string style. I actually see the lick from the first position of the Blues scale which is B minor but I connect it with the B natural minor which shares notes with D major which is the key of the song so this way I can easily make my way to the lick I actually create the melodic side of the soloing from the B natural minor. The other thing which is really cool in this system is to combining...

Extreme Pentatonic Improvisation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Monday, March 23, 2015, In : how to improvise

About
Here is a Pentatonic lick played shred guitar style three notes per string completely legato and also to a jamtrack so you can here how it sounds in a musical situation. Added to this lick also some string skipping which is sometimes necessary when you play pentatonic three notes per string style.

Improvising
To impliment this lick into an actual improvisation situation I made a system that makes it easier to do this. In this particular lick even though the lick is pentatonic I analyze it...

About
Hi guys this is actually the first time I post a specifically Melodic Minor lick for some reason. And Isay so because I really love the sound of that scale. In the video I do quite some in depth explaining but if you are one of those who prefer to read let me talk a little about it here. The lick is completely composed from the patterns in the Melodic Minor scale and the specific patterns I use from the Melodic Minor scale is the second and first position. I made it so that it starts and...

Alternate Picking Basics part 2

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, March 20, 2015, In : Alternate Picking

About
Hey there, I made this video because I got some feedback regarding the previous video touching on the subject of the right hand picking method. So I realized that the previous video was not thorough enough and its funny that whenever I go into detail on a subject that seems quite simple to the untrained eye "such as my own" then I suddenly conceive that there is much more to the case that I first thought. So in this video I will go more into detail on the ways to hold the pick. For me pe...

Extreme legato 2

About
Hey guys and dolls ! here is a phrase that both works fabulous as a lick and as a drill to work up your four notes per string patterns and legato technique. You are probably finding out that not all the four notes per string patterns are equally easy or hard to perform. In my case its especially the stretch between the ring and long finger I have a problem with and so I made this drill slash lick so it has a equal amount of easy and challenging fingerings. Then theres of course also the ...

So in this case with the first Extreme Legato chop the helping hand shows you...

I go through all the pitfalls I believe there can appear when you want to play fast alternate picking such as where to establish your control of the right arm and hand. The first point of control of the movement actually starts in ...

Thats what I call a shred guitar players wet dream ! playing extreme shred guitar in front of a large crowd - beautifull !!
