The Tapping Revelation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, In : Guitar Tapping

Two ways of playing the Pentatonic scale using Tapping, the first way is to play the Pentatonic scale as a three notes per scale pattern and then adding one note as Tapping, using this way you play a new pattern on every other string.

The other way is to play the good old Pentatonic pattern you may know using two notes per string, then the cool thing is that the pattern you would play on every other string, in this case the A, G and high E string you add to the same string using a two note Ta...

What's the deal with 8 finger tapping

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, December 6, 2018, In : 8 Finger Tapping

It's absolutely a valid question to ask since it seems very much over the top to play 8 finger tapping.
The first thing that comes to mind that makes this a valid technique is the sound that is not really possible to get without using this technique.

If you have been using basic tapping before you will also see that the technique makes you able to play stuff you would not have done with other techniques. Some people will say that its possible to do the job just with legato but its a ridiculou...

Cobra turbo alternate picking

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Saturday, December 1, 2018, In : Alternate Picking

Cobra turbo alternate picking or just high quality fast alternate picking What I refer to with this crazy name "that I got from the movie Cobra, when Stallone is in he's car pressing a turbo button and he's car drives about one percent faster" is to the concept of reaching your top speed and then with force getting just a few percent speed more.
The problem with that, with those very few extra percent you lower the quality of the sound quite a bit, with pop outs and  losing the stamina. So i...

Obviously you can do both as long as you dont exclude the all the different aspects of the technique, get more into detail

Super charge your results

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, November 18, 2018, In : how to practice

It's so simple
Its all about results and often we forget that to get results we need to be a little more exclusive in what we practice instead of trying to learn everything at the same time.

Of course you should at some point learn all the techniques you want to master but not everything at the same time.

What kicks us in the butt to practice and makes the process so much more fun is the results so instead of trying to learn everything now, let's focus on just one thing at the time and get resul...

Extreme Sweep Picking 8 Finger Tapping

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, November 1, 2018, In : sweep picking 8 finger tapping

Technique
This is sweep picking combined with 8 finger tapping and to be able to do this properly you have to learn and master the technique where I slide the pick up the thumb using my index finger, this movement enables you to use all four fingers on each hand to do the 8 finger tapping technique. This is obviously not an easy technique but its a technique I developed many years ago to combine those two wonderfull techniques, sweep picking and 8 finger tapping

Theory
The way you can implement ...

Ionian #5 sweep picking arpeggio

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, In : Sweep Picking Tapping

Technique
This is a combination of the Sweep Picking technique and the multi finger tapping technique, but also I play a four notes per string legato pattern on the high E string with my fretting hand and then I tap using the long finger and the ring finger and still keeping the pick between the thumb and index finger

Theory
This arpeggio is very specific so it can mainly be used from the sixth step of the Harmonic minor scale

How to practice
If you by any chance already feel relatively comfortabl...

Extreme Tapping Locrian omit fourth

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, In : extreme tapping

About
So this technique is actually the same we make us of in the Major scale and Dorian and Phrygian Extreme Tapping lick we did the last few times, we just change the major third into a minor third and change the ninth or second into a flattened and use the index finger for this of course, this way get the Locrian, then this new pattern in the tapping hand makes sure we get the flattened fifth and omits the fourth, the two whole steps in the tapping hand also gives us the flattened sixth and...

About
So this technique is actually the same we make us of as the Major scale Extreme Tapping lick we did last time, we just change the major third into a minor third and this way get the Dorian scale except for the seventh note of the scale but other than that its the same fingering I make use of and the same technique

Extreme Tapping Major Scale

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, September 21, 2018, In : extreme tapping

About
So this lick or scale is one of my ultimate trademark licks that really got my playing going and it can for you too. Once you get a hold of this baby you will be able to shred like a maniac for sure

Theory
This is sort of a Ionian scale but it can also work as a dominant scale since there is no seventh in it, so its a complete major scale with no seventh and therefore you can use it either as a Ionian scale also called the major scale or you could use it as a dominant step scale, or a mix...

About
Here is one of my all time favorites, I have been using this lick and alikes for many years now, both for improvising and composed solos since the early nineties. So here I will give the technique to you

Theory
This row of arpeggios is three different inversiens of A minor, its triads and then I add some extra notes using multi finger tapping, the notes being E, G and A in the first inversion which is just the seventh added to the sweep picking triad arpeggio. then the next inversion mak...

Super 4 Notes Per String Legato

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Sunday, November 13, 2016, In : legato

How To Play
This lick after the initial time it takes to get used to the four notes per string concept is relatively simple to play and you can improvise all you want with the number of times you repeat each four notes per string pattern and make it a little more your own idea.
But what needs drilling in this one is the final pattern on the hihg E string as I also touch upon in the video, that final high E can take some time to avoid the muting of that note, which is what happened a lot for ...

Fancy Arpeggios

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, August 14, 2015, In : Sweep Picking Tapping

About
This is a C Major slash A minor Sweep picking, Tapping, Legato and sliding Arpeggios. It's really cool sounding and you can work it into your own playing from the second position of the Major scale, this means that when you are improvising and soloing and you at one point reach the second Scale position and also the G string you can break into this lick. Of course this is in the key of C but it will benefit you to the extreme if you try to use it in other keys, you could skip the 24th ...

Japanese Scale Arpeggio

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Friday, August 7, 2015, In : exotic scales

About
This is an old lesson from my old channel, but the lick is kinda cool. The thing about the Japanese scale is that it only consists of five notes, and just like in the Pentatonic scale, it pretty much trims all the fat and this way makes sure that each individual note sounds awesome in conjunction with the chord. Regarding the lick that I still call an Arpeggio even though it makes use of all five notes of the scale, but its played using Sweep picking and you still get the Arpeggio type...

Exotic scales Enigmatic scale Legato lesson

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, April 2, 2015, In : exotic scales

About
This lick is composed from the really weird scale called The Enigmatic scale, and the name actually makes a lot of sense because just hearing the scale in itself gives no real clue as to what the root is. But the lick works perfectly as a lick you throw into something that's very harmonic which then will really throw you off for a second because it sounds so out there. Other than that the video is also made in the period where I produced the Mega program about mastering the Legato techni...

Extreme Tapping Arpeggios combined with Guitar Scales

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Thursday, April 2, 2015, In : extreme tapping

About
This lick is one of my trademarks and what I normally call Extreme Tapping. Its a killer pattern that sounds really extreme once you got the technique down. One of the first things regarding this technique that most people find a little weird is something like starting a lick out with a hammer on which can feel a little awkward in the beginning. The nex thing is to make the string skipping lose the possible breaks between the notes and obviously also the string noise that can happen when...

About
Rightyho !! here is once again one of those crazy ass sweep picking triad arpeggios combined with tapping. And in this one I obviously do the sweep picking with the thumb and index finger which then gives me the possibility to tap with the long finger, ring finger and little finger. I want to tell you that it is a good attitude to have towards anything you want to learn that you can easily reach the goal that you have set for yourself but its also important to know that - that being said...

Paul Gilbert Scarified solo Tutorial

About
This is the original solo from Scarified from the second Racer x album called Second Heat and in my opinion this is certainly the strongest of the Racer x albums, well the first one also kicks ass. But this is back in the days where Paul Gilbert really kicked ass, in those days you could really hear in he's playing that he was practicing a lot, there was so much "freshness" in he's playing and it really shows in the original solo in Scarified, so if you have not yet checked out the old ...

About
Merry Christmas everyone, heres my little Christmas present for you, it's a Sweep picking 8 Finger Tapping lick which obviously takes a lot of getting used to, but the real reason I make these videos with quite advanced licks is because even though they take a lot of focus and practice I experience that they really inspire in general to play and practice more. Of course if you are a beginner you will also need some more beginner stuff to practice to get some faster results and successes....

Blues Shred Improvisation

Posted by Niels Vejlyt on Monday, March 23, 2015, In : how to improvise

About
This lick is composed from the B minor Blues scale but played all legato style and three notes per string style. I actually see the lick from the first position of the Blues scale which is B minor but I connect it with the B natural minor which shares notes with D major which is the key of the song so this way I can easily make my way to the lick I actually create the melodic side of the soloing from the B natural minor. The other thing which is really cool in this system is to combining...

Extreme Pentatonic Improvisation

About
Here is a Pentatonic lick played shred guitar style three notes per string completely legato and also to a jamtrack so you can here how it sounds in a musical situation. Added to this lick also some string skipping which is sometimes necessary when you play pentatonic three notes per string style.

Improvising
To impliment this lick into an actual improvisation situation I made a system that makes it easier to do this. In this particular lick even though the lick is pentatonic I analyze it...

Extreme Guitar

About
I think we can all agree that this extreme guitar lesson is totally and completely over the top. It features a variety of techniques such as Sweep Picking, Legato, tappin and 8 finger tapping and three and four notes per string patterns. I guess you can also see and here that its highly improvised and that is the reason that I did not slow it down. I basically play a E minor sweep picking pattern and the first time I do it I add a four notes per string on the high E string played legato ...

Extreme Tapping Major Arpeggio

About
Its Shred Guitar time again. Here is a really awesome tapping pattern that I have been using for quite some years but I expanded it with a few more notes... what a bonus. Its one of those techniques where its pretty difficult to damnp the strings while you play because you need to tap with several fingers on low and high strings, so to make it juuuust perfect I sometimes use the neck pickup to kill the noise if I need to. For example a live situation where feel less confident than when s...

Stunt Guitar 2

About
Here is a new 8 finger tapping lick that is another way of doing eight finger tapping than I normally do it. Its a little inspired from TJ Helmerich who I would say actually use the Right hand in general 75 procent more than the left hand when he is soloing. The first thing of difficulty that comes to mind is the individual work of the right hand fingers since the first pattern the right hand is doing is almost all on different strings. What I found especially challenging was the part wh...

About
Hey guys and dolls ! here is a phrase that both works fabulous as a lick and as a drill to work up your four notes per string patterns and legato technique. You are probably finding out that not all the four notes per string patterns are equally easy or hard to perform. Then theres of course also the ...
